Why is being in the present moment, so important? If you are not in the present moment, you will not be experiencing your life fully here on earth, with your body. You are spirit, a soul, a spiritual being, and you have a body. You are not your body. You have a body, but you are not that physical body. Again, YOU are spirit.
While you have the power to be in the past, present, or future, as spirit, your physical body can only be in one place, right here, right now. Wherever your attention is, that is where you are, as spirit, the soul that you are. When your awareness, your attention, is in the present, your body will be less afraid, less anxious, and more secure, because you are there to take care of it.
You will enjoy your life more when you are in the present moment. If you are experiencing turbulence in your life right now, you may not believe me. Whether you are in the past, present, or future, will the turbulence be happening? If you are going through a challenging time and you are not in the present with your body to reassure it, it will feel afraid, like a neglected child, that is not being cared for.
Think of yourself as being your own parent, and the caregiver, and legal guardian of your body. While it may be a habit for you to focus on the past, whether replaying pleasant memories, or rehashing trauma and disturbance, that practice will cause your body to experience heavier energies. You will be more likely to experience depression and apathy when focused in the past. If you tend to daydream about the future, dwelling on things you wish you had, or spending time worrying about things that may or may not happen, your body is more likely to experience nervousness, fear, and anxiety.
Remember, your body can only be in one place, the present moment. It doesn’t know how to handle what may happen in the future, whether it is glorious, or traumatic. Nor can it operate in the past, re-experiencing memories it likes or doesn’t like. Your body only understand the present moment, and what is happening right now.
So, how can you, we, be more in the present moment? The style of meditation that I practice and teach provides techniques that allow you to easily do this. If you want to learn more, and experience the power of meditating as a group, I hope you’ll join me on Wednesdays on Zoom at 7:00pm PST. But there are some things you can do right now to assist you with this process.
Since your body is always in the present, you can use it as a focal point to help draw your attention more here. For example, you can focus on your breathing, your breath. The air flowing in and out of your lungs. Continue to do this until you notice a shift, a change, and your body is more settled and calm. In addition to your breathing, you can be aware of your heartbeat, your pulse, or any rhythm or sensation in your body to draw your attention more to it, your body, and thus more to the present moment.
You can use your body’s senses to draw your attention more to the present. Be aware of any sounds,
smells, tastes. Practice at any time, such as while you are walking outside, eating food, or drinking a beverage. Notice your body’s weight and mass while you are sitting, standing, lying down. Experience your body’s sense of touch, and use these sensations to bring your awareness more here. If you are sighted, when your eyes are open, you can use this sense as well to be more consciously aware of your present time surroundings in the physical reality. One important thing to note, however, and an opportunity for some fun learning, is to notice when you use your eyesight do you stay near your actual eyes? Or do you move out into the object you are looking at? It’s quite common to move out into what we physically see. Staying close to your body, and focusing more internally, while viewing what is going on externally is something to practice and develop as a beneficial skill.
Grounding to the center of the earth, and centering within your head are two essential, empowering, and effective techniques that I practice and teach during meditations that can assist with this development. Ready to learn more about these and other helpful life tools? Join me this Wednesday at 7:00pm PST.
Hope to see you Wednesday or another time soon! If you prefer one-on-one time to group learning, I also offer meditation coaching sessions. You can choose a single hour, package of four, or even a half hour trial to see what it’s like.
